On June 23, the European Parliament adopted a resolution on the immediate granting of candidate status to Ukraine and Moldova. 515 deputies voted in favor, 40 voted against and 25 abstained. This is stated in the voting protocol published on the European Parliament's website. The corresponding decision was supported by the European Council.

Poland (92%), Portugal (86%), Luxembourg, Malta and Italy (83%), Romania (82%) and Belgium (81%) showed the highest level of support for granting Ukraine the EU candidate status. Instead, Ukraine was least supported by France - 52% and Latvia - 38%.

It is worth noting that 20% of French deputies in the European Parliament voted against. Together with Austria (16%) and Ireland (15%), these are the largest indicators of Ukraine's non-support in this context.

Representatives of Cyprus abstained the most in percentage terms - 33% (2 out of 6 deputies).

Among Latvian deputies, who generally showed the lowest percentage of support for the decision, the following parliamentarians did not vote for granting Ukraine candidate status:

  • Dace Melbarde (Dace MELBĀRDE, party "Nacionālā apvienība" Visu Latvija! "-" Tēvzemei un Brīvībai / LNNK ");
  • Inese VAIDERE (VIENOTĪBA party);
  • Tatjana ŽDANOKA (Latvijas Krievu savienība party);
  • Roberts ZĪLE (party "Nacionālā apvienība" Visu Latvija! "-" Tēvzemei un Brīvībai / LNNK ").

Civil Network OPORA also analyzed how various parties supported Ukraine in granting it EU candidate status. We were most supported by the Greens/European Free Alliance - 87%, the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (Renewed Europe Group) - 84%, the European People's Party - 83%, the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats - 81% and the European Conservatives and Reformists - 73% .

Instead, members of the Identity and Democracy Group showed support at only 31%. 45% of the representatives of this group in the European Parliament voted against. Also, 14% of independent parliamentarians and 13% of members of the European United Left /Nordic Green Left faction voted against.

In general, there were representatives of the following political groups and countries among those who voted against:

Identity and Democracy Group: Austria (3 persons), Belgium (2 persons), Italy (1 person), the Netherlands (1 person), Germany (7 persons), France (14 persons), the Czech Republic (1 person);

The Left group in the European Parliament: Ireland (2 people), Germany (1 person), Portugal (2 people);

Members of the European Parliament without a group from the following countries: Greece (2 persons), Slovakia (1 person), France (2 persons), Croatia (1 person).

Among the 25 abstentions are representatives of the following political groups: Group of European Conservatives and Reformists, Group on Identity and Democracy, Group of the European People's Party (Christian Democrats), The Left group in the European Parliament, Group of the Greens/European Free Alliance and Members of the European Parliament without groups.

A total of 580 European parliament members took part in the vote.

It may be recalled that the European Parliament consists of 705 members elected in the 27 member states of the enlarged European Union. Since 1979, members of the European Parliament have been elected by direct universal vote for a five-year term. All deputies belong to the following political groups: Group of the European People's Party (Christian Democrats), Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament ), Renew Europe Group, Group of the Greens / European Free Alliance, Identity and Democracy Group, European Conservatives and Reformists Group ), The Left group in the European Parliament - GUE / NGL and non-attached members of the European Parliament.
