Social networks have been the main source of news over the past month for the vast majority of respondents — 95%. Twice as often respondents used news websites — 44%. Next follow friends and family — 37%, television — 33%, radio — 12%, and print media — 4%.

Of all the news sources, the most popular are social networks — they account for 68% of all content units consumed by respondents, and the share of the calculated total consumption time is 61%. That is more than two-thirds of all data sources, which is significantly ahead of other types of sources in terms of the number of uses and consumption time. The second position is held by news websites (including news services such as Google, UKR.NET, UNIAN.NET, etc.) — 18% of all consumed content units by frequency of use, and almost as much (16%) — by total consumption time. Television is in the third place. It accounts for only 10% of all consumed units of content, but as much as 17.2% of the total consumption time.

To consume the news in social networks, participants of the diary study most often used the Telegram (48% of references) and YouTube (25%).

CRITERIA FOR THE IMPORTANCE OF THE NEWS SOURCE

It was important for respondents to constantly receive information from Ukraine on the following main topics: local news, the situation on the fronts, national news, etc. Study participants did not like messages that:

  • try to scare, shock consumers or stimulate dislike of the enemy;
  • too much praise for the current government or its representatives, whose actions after the war can raise a lot of questions.

Efficiency and relevance

Due to the security threats, rapid communication is extremely valuable. Truthfulness and reliability of information Respondents strongly condemned the channels and speakers who provide inaccurate information, even when with “good intentions”. In any case, consumers are ready to make concessions if the information is provided very quickly and it is specified that this is a preliminary assessment and the data are yet to be clarified.

Laconicity

A significant flow of information makes you select, while the choice can last a few seconds and It is based on the few lead phrases. If respondents have a need to understand some issue, then they intentionally search for information on their own, on websites or YouTube.

 

The study “Media Consumption and Public Activity of Ukrainian People Who Found Temporary Shelter in Poland” was conducted on the basis of analytical research and commissioned by the All -Ukrainian NGO Civil Network OPORA , with the support of the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES). The survey was carried out by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology during October , 26 — November , 30, 2022 in the Republic of Poland. The purpose of the study is to identify how and from where the news updates are learnt by Ukrainian people who found temporary shelter from the war in the Republic of Poland after February, 24, 2022. The researchers also examined the extent of respondents' involvement in the political and public life of Ukraine, as well as their interest in it. The study included two parts: a diary online survey of 200 respondents, and 15 in -depth interviews
